I get phishing emails regularly and so does my wife. A friend fell for one recently and almost fell for another one. A client had an employee almost wire $25,000 to a phony account. Luckily he passed her in the hall, she said I’ll get that wire out today, and he said, “What wire?” It cost another client a lot of money, think mid-six figures, because his Managed Service Provider got hacked, and he got penalized for an information leak.
But it’s not just tech stuff. I recently got letters via US Mail about:
- Getting coverage for any water line damage. The premium was so low it led me to think a) they’ll find a way to get out of paying anything or b) there all so few claims because nothing ever happens.
- I’m running out of time to get an Extended Vehicle Service Plan for my vehicle as I’m about to see this offer expire. They didn’t say whether it’s about our 1.5-year-old EV, our 11-year-old SUV, or 22-year-old truck.
Bottom line, don’t you wish these people would put their energy into something legit? They may not all get thrown in jail like the tech worker who stole six-figures from his employer and got fake PPP loans but many of them should.
